Birthday Party at Havering Folk Club
http://andyrobertsmusic.blogspot.com/2009/02/birthday-party-at-havering-folk-club.html
Surprise parties can have a habit of not going exactly to plan but Sarah's 18th at Havering Folk Club hit the spot.Amidst the chocolate cake, popcorn and pringles there was some music making as well, with plenty of new faces in the audience which needed to extend sideways out the back. I don't know how many of then we'll see again though.I took my chinese guitar for the first time, it's nice and light to carry being only half the depth of a full jumbo dreadnought acoustic, but the sound produced is correspondingly less voluminous, so no good for quiet finger picking unamplified at a crowded venue. Good enough to strum with a flat pick though, just about.I played an old song of mine I've been revisiting recently, called Mazet with the last verse in French. Also two Bob Dylan songs, One Too Many Mornings and I shall Be Released

Andy Roberts Music on the Sweetcron
I've got around to updating the Lifestream thingy here at andyrobertsblog and added some music stuff into the sidebar.
At present most of the music is orientated towards the April 1st Event:
Havering Folk Club - April 1st 2009 - Andy Roberts
but there's also a new Sampler CD which needs a home page somewhere, and I've embedded the ReverbNation widget in the sidebar here so that music can be played right here from the lifestream.
Meanwhile there are also a few new videos up at Andy Roberts Music on YouTube.

Foxen Night at Havering Folk Club
http://andyrobertsmusic.blogspot.com/2009/02/foxen-night-at-havering-folk-club.html
Last Night was the turn of Havering Folk Club regulars Foxen also known as John and Margaret to take the stage for the members special night. This was the event postponed from last week because of a flooded cellar at the Golden Lion, Romford where Havering Folk Club meets every Wednesday at Eight. The first thing to notice was the large array of assorted instruments they brought with them to accompany their polished duets. John's hand made six string guitar sounded particularly fine, and he also treated us to 12string guitar, mandolin, banjo and concertina while Margaret made beautiful sounds from a hammer dulcimer, bowed ?saltrine?, autoharp and percussion. The choice of songs was spot on with many own compositions and one or two traditional tunes added into the mix. I think there were also 16 floor spots altogether so in preparation for my own Andy Roberts Night on April 1st, I was taking notes of the evenings timing to give me a rough idea of what to expect. I think they ended up doing 35 minutes in the first half and ended up with a 40 minutes set after the break, which sounds like a long time but even after carefully planning and timing each song they still had to drop one or two from the setlist.Floor singers obviously only had time for one song each so I played Waiting on the 12 string.

Mozambique at Havering Folk Club
http://distributedresearch.net/blog/2009/01/27/haveringfolkclub-andyroberts-mozambique
Well, here’s a funny thing. Peter Walters from Havering Folk Club has started putting up some live performance videos on youTube and here’s one of me me singing “Mozambique”, often a popular song from Dylan’s Desire album of 1976. Click here to view the embedded video. This would have been recorded on September 3rd 2008 according to this entry on my music blog
I think the visuals survive the youtube compression OK and the sound quality is simply what you’d expect from the built in mic of a video camera. Thanks Peter for taking the trouble to do the editing and format conversion etc. By the way, if anybody is in the East London/Essex area for April 1st 2009 that’s when I’ll be doing a whole set of my own songs and others as a featured member of Havering Folk Club for the evening and any support would be appreciated. It would be great to see you there in our quaint little pub, The Golden Lion, Romford where the club meets Wednesdays at Eight.
Thanks for subscribing to Andy Roberts blog Mozambique at Havering Folk Club

Hold On Below
http://andyrobertsmusic.blogspot.com/2009/01/hold-on-below.html
So last night was the second and final Havering Folk Club at the White Horse. Next week we return to the reopened Golden Lion. Good. last night I played Hold On Below for the first time in a few decades, a fast and loud song from my teenage years. People who think they should be able to learn how to play the guitar in a couple of months in their spare time should take note. Then from out of the recent Dylan fest I selected Tomorrow is a long timeAlso yesterday, I've started looking through my songlists that I began compiling at the beginning of my recent trip to Spain. That led to the collection of lyrics I brought back from the solo trip a few years back. There are still two or three more to come out of there, then it's a question of selecting half a dozen for the first set on April 1st.

Havering Folk Club Temporary Venue
http://andyrobertsmusic.blogspot.com/2009/01/havering-folk-club-temporary-venue.html
Due to the sudden closure of the Golden Lion pub in Romford, the Havering Folk club met in a new venue last night. The little stables building at the back of the White Horse in Chadwell Heath was most acceptable as a means of keeping the continuity of this group going, though about half the size of the function room in the old place, and with nowhere for larger groups of musicians to put their instruments down or tune up. It was easy enough to make the journey, just 5 minutes walk from Chadwell Heath station and with a large car park for drivers. The hope remains that the town centre Golden Lion pub will reopen under new ownership soon and that the function room will remain available so the Havering Folk Club will be able to return to the most popular venue and able to accommodate larger audiences as are more likely to turn up regularly.Last night we were treated to a performance by Gemma Salter and friend from the cast of Come Dancing who sang a lovely song that she wrote during the early days of the show. I played an instrumental for the first time, a very old tune of mine called Narrowboats which was actually composed on the roof of a narrowboat during a Kea Youth Club expedition to the Midlands and river Severn a long time ago. Then I sang my version of Wonderwall , the traditional Mancunian folk song by Oasis, dedicated to Frankie whose birthday it was yesterday. In the second set I managed to get a request for The Cormorants Song aka London BridgeListen to Cormorants on Last.fm - free download

Havering Folk Club seeks new venue
http://andyrobertsmusic.blogspot.com/2008/12/havering-folk-club-seeks-new-venue.html
Well, the last night at Havering Folk Club turned out to be the last at the Golden Lion EVER.The bloody pub has only gone into receivership. Bummer.Apparently this kind of thing happens quite a lot to my Havering Folk Club friends, so looking for a new venue is a regular activity.See http://www.romfordrecorder.co.ukOrchid Group, the company which owns the 500-year-old pub, in High Street, Romford, went into administration.Customers of the Grade II listed building this weekend were stunned to find it closed without warning.Loyal patron Eric Willson, 63, from Collier Row, said: "It was a bit of a shock. People who arrived on Saturday night couldn't believe it."The pub has now been taken over by Punch Taverns. It will be closed until mid-January, but staff will be paid in the meantime.
