The tasty new logo We’ve been busy lately here at WordPress.com — we’ve had an announcement of a new or updated feature for you every day this week. Today, you’re getting a two-fer! Earlier this week, we announced VideoPress, the great new video feature for WordPress.com. Now VideoPress has its own home on the web at VideoPress.com. We’ve also got a great video introduction created by our company auteur Michael Pick, so be sure to head over and check it out. We’ll be continuing to add features to VideoPress, including support for WordPress.org users, so stay tuned to VideoPress for all the latest. P.S. If you’re a design geek like me, you might be interested to know that the VideoPress logo (as well as all of VideoPress.com) is set in the beautiful Museo family of typefaces, designed by your fellow WordPress.com bloggers at the exljbris Font Foundry (exljbris.wordpress.com).

You may have noticed that videos around here have been getting higher and higher quality. I don’t just mean the cool content from WordPress.tv, but the video player and video/audio quality itself. We’ve rewritten how videos work here on WordPress.com from the ground-up and taken inspiration from the great products at Vimeo and Smugmug, and are pleased to formally offer our video upgrade to everyone. Here’s a sample of what it can do especially for those sweltering in the heat right now:
With the video upgrade (available on your upgrades page, bottom left of dashboard navigation) when you upload a video of almost any format we’ll crunch it into several different formats just right for streaming on the web, DVD quality, HD quality, and even optimized for iTunes and Miro. Videos can be streamed and embedded here on WordPress.com or on any site around the world, even in full HD. The video feature was part of the space upgrade previously and for those that helped us test it we have now extended a one-year free video upgrade. We just want to make sure existing video users can continue to use it without any hassle. For new users, the video upgrade costs about 5 bucks a month. As an added bonus, each video has stats attached to it so you can see how often they’re being viewed, and more stats are coming. If you’d like to geek out, here’s some technical information about the encoding of videos and such, and the entire VideoPress WordPress video player and transcoder is under the GPL and open to the world. In the future we’ll be working on giving your viewers more options for streaming and downloading videos, better and more in-depth stats, more player customization, and a way for WordPress.org users to use and embed the new player easier.

Free FTP Client Software for Windows
Filezilla is a free and open source FTP client software program used for connnecting to a webserver to update websites. Here’s a short tutorial video which deals with downloading, setting up and connecting Filezilla FTP to a website. I describe the twin pane approach, and show you how to download a website file, edit it , test and then re-upload so the new version is live on your website.
This Filezilla video can be watched from right here below as an embedded YouTube video, do try the HD (High Definition) and full screen options:
Or you can download the full original 84Mb video file onto your computer using the free file hosting service at divshare: Download Filezilla FTP Video Tutorial Filezilla FTP client software is available in Windows, Mac OS X and Linux versions.
Good alternative FTP clients apart from Filezilla are Cute FTP for Windows and Mac (small charge) , and on a Mac there are also Fetch and Cyberduck.

Here’s an aerial picture of The Coombe Valley Raceway Banger Racing stadium in Dover Kent where I used to go on alternate Sundays to watch the banger racing, stock cars, hot rods and mini rods. They also hold special two day meetings to give people something to do on bank holidays. I don’t know how many other figure of eight racing circuits there are in the world but this is the only one I’ve ever heard of. The banger racing takes place in beautiful valley surrounded by wooded hillsides, typical of the East Kent chalk downs.
Here’s an amateur video of a big van bangers race which I think captures some of the excitement and chaos of standing on the bank near the approach to the pits bend.
Another one of a Bangers Destruction Derby

A quick video capture of a pair of mute swans mating rather gracefully on Easter Sunday in Wanstead Park. Click here to view the embedded video. Easter is all about eggs, (Easter, Ester, Eastre, Eostre, Estrus, Oestrus) fertility and celebrating springtime in the traditional manner so this seems quite appropriate today.
The location for this video is the Alexandra Lake, Wanstead Flats but we call it the duck pond.

The first clip uploaded to the Andy Roberts Music youTube account from the Havering Folk Club Andy Roberts Night DVD is a song about Cajun Music and Cajun Food:
“This is a man who know his onions”
What’s it all about? Well you see, I once worked in a canteen cooking dinners for a bunch of people doing printing and office work. It was hard work but fun. I often got to design the menu and choose the music, and stuff with rice was practical and popular. Hence Jamabalaya fits in well with Paella and Biryani, Risotto and Pilaff. It's all the same techique rediscovered in different continents by different cultures using different combinations of ingredients and spices.

Well, here’s a funny thing. Peter Walters from Havering Folk Club has started putting up some live performance videos on youTube and here’s one of me me singing “Mozambique”, often a popular song from Dylan’s Desire album of 1976. Click here to view the embedded video. This would have been recorded on September 3rd 2008 according to this entry on my music blog
I think the visuals survive the youtube compression OK and the sound quality is simply what you’d expect from the built in mic of a video camera. Thanks Peter for taking the trouble to do the editing and format conversion etc. By the way, if anybody is in the East London/Essex area for April 1st 2009 that’s when I’ll be doing a whole set of my own songs and others as a featured member of Havering Folk Club for the evening and any support would be appreciated. It would be great to see you there in our quaint little pub, The Golden Lion, Romford where the club meets Wednesdays at Eight.
