Acoustic Guitar Podcasts: Episode #19
http://andyroberts.me/podcast/acoustic-guitar-podcasts-episode-19
Episode #19 in Andy Roberts series of acoustic guitar podcasts was recorded on Tuesday 9th November 2011 and published today on the 10th. Inspired by friends’ lists of 15 songwriters tagged and copied in Facebook, I played songs by Neil Diamond, Steve Tilston, Andy Roberts, Loudon Wainwright and a bonus track Roy Harper song at the start of which there’s an unfortunate inbound telephone ringtone but I didn’t let that faze me at all, oh no. If you do happen to be listening on an iphone or in a house then the effect could be unpredictable. Here’s the stuff:

The Last Nail – Romford Folk Club
http://andyroberts.me/andy-roberts/the-last-nail-romford-folk-club
Last Tuesday I rushed out from finishing my podcast Episode 15 and caught the train to Romford, just like so many times on Wednesdays, except this was to visit Romford Folk Club. It’s always on Tuesdays, so not the best fit with the weekly podcasts, but I’ve proven that it can be done in time without even missing the opening number. The guest artists were supposed to be from Yorkshire but because of some hiccup, a couple of musicians who normally host the folk club at Lee On Sea, Mick and Pete stood in at short notice and entertained all with a hearty selection of mostly Irish and Australian folk songs. I’ll be playing a guest spot myself at the Romford Folk Club in April next year, the 5th I think, but on Tuesday I played one Andy Roberts original song, The Last Nail.
The Romford Folk Club meets on Tuesdays at 8.00pm downstairs at the Sun, London Road, Romford RM7 9QA The Last Nail Lyrics Above the stone walled harbour, or down the winding hill That’s where they built the boatyard, and the structure stands there still. Not much boat building happens now, just repairs and fitting out but when the wind rattles the boatmasts, you can hear the old boatbuilders shout: Will you pass the last nail over and I’ll knock it into place, Then with four more coats of varnish, she’ll be ready for the race. Our grandfathers put up the boatyard, to build the fishing fleet, more than fifty boats in the harbour, and shops all down the main street then the steam age brought in the drifters, boat builders became engineers Now the wind blows straight through the boatyard, there’ll be no more boat building here Will you pass the last nail over and I’ll knock it into place, Then with four more coats of varnish, she’ll be ready for the race. With a keen eye for staying in business, they switched over to build leisure craft And the weekend yachtsmen snapped them up, no expense spared fore or aft Then wooden hulls went out of fashion, the order book emptied last year So the bankers foreclosed on the boatyard, and there’ll be no more boatbuilding here Will you pass the last nail over and I’ll knock it into place, Then with four more coats of varnish, she’ll be ready for the race. Now the Vikings invented the clinker for both strength and shallow seas and the herring boats followed the coastline, until the canning ships found the key There’s a regatta here every August, and the whole village turns out again But the Sea Queen’s no real competition, and it’s guaranteed to rain Will you pass the last nail over and I’ll knock it into place, Then with four more coats of varnish, she’ll be ready for the race. Above the stone walled harbour, or down the winding hill that’s where they built the boatyard, and the skeleton stands there still. No more boat building happens now, not even fitting out but when the wind rattles the boatmasts, you can still hear the old boys shout: Will you pass the last nail over, we’ll knock it into place, Then with four more coats of varnish, she’ll be ready for the race.

Over 100 downloads for #12 in one week
http://andyroberts.me/podcast/over-100-downloads-for-12-in-one-week
Podcast Episode 12 has been the first episode to achieve over 100 downloads within a week, before the next episode is even recorded. Now 100 may seem like a very small number compared to some of the big multi-artist curated podcasts out there, but for me it’s a milestone which represents a steady growth in the reach of the music over the weeks and now months that I’ve been keeping going at this, every week without fail. Of course without much tangible feedback, there’s no way of telling how many people actually listen, whether multiple listens to one download or some who collect files and never get around to listening at all, it’s all a bit of a mystery so all we have to go on for now are the numbers. I’ve noticed that youTube are now allowing uploads more than 10 minutes long, which means that the version of The Same Old Rock which is on podcast 12 can be put up there, whereas before it would have been just a little to long to scrape in. So tonight for Episode 13 I think I may do two more longer songs, both my own. See you on Ustream at 7.00pm Tuesdays

Cricketer, San Francisco and Mazet
http://andyroberts.me/andy-roberts/cricketer-san-francisco-and-mazet
Three songs performed live at Havering Folk Club last Wednesday with the 12 string guitar. When an Old Cricketer Cricket has been in the news recently, not in a good way, with allegations of match fixing but sometimes any association is enough to prompt a vaguely relevant song or song title. Or sometimes just because of one lyric within a song, it doesn’t matter if anybody else gets it or not. Any excuse to break the agony of having to make a decision as to what to play next! So this is When an Old Cricketer Leaves The Crease written by Roy Harper adapted by Andy Roberts
I do have another version of Old Cricketer online here but that’s played on the six string, I don’t really know which is the best performance from myself, perhaps you would be so kind as to “like”, “favourite” “rate” or whichever is appropriate on any of these videos to give an indication of relative quality, that might then help me choose, thanks. San Francisco This song is San Francisco by Maxime le Forestier, Andy Roberts version with his funny English accent.
Other performances of the same song 1) San Francisco Mazet Not just because I just got back from France but also having met an old friend from the Mazet last week.

The Last Nail Live at HFC I played my own song “The Last Nail” live at Havering folk club last week on the 12 string guitar. Here’s the video:

Bambuser Platform for Live Streaming
http://andyroberts.me/live-streaming/bambuser-platform-for-live-streaming
I just found out about the Bambuser platform for live streaming video and audio fro a mobile phone or webcam. As such it could be considered a possible alternative to Ustream that I’ve been using for the live show on Tuesdays over the past year or so. There is a facility to download saved broadcasts, so that would work for stripping out the audio for podcasts, and for editing out songs for uploading to youTube. There’s also a chat facility but I haven’t tested that yet. The sound quality seems acceptable, and there’s a much shorter lag between broadcast and feedback.

HFC July 21st 2010
http://andyroberts.me/havering-folk-club/hfc-july-21st-2010
Back to Havering Folk Club I went along to Havering Folk Club last Wednesday after a week away on holiday and tried to do a vesrion of one of the new songs I haven’t finished yet. I know It didn’t work out very well, partly because I don’t have the lyrics memorised yet and I tried reading from a crib sheet on the music stand, which has never worked out for me in past and probably never will. I can sing and play at the same time, sometimes I can sing, play and read at the same time, but not it seems in front of an audience, standing up and without reading glasses. So I’ve uploaded the podcast versions of the unfinished songs to youTube instead. The one called “Untitled 1″ in the episode 3 shownotes is provisionally called “Trevellas” now, and unfinished 2 is called “Summerhouse” but I also have a plan for combining the two songs into one single work that would be longer and more complex. We’ll have to see.
Sitting On The Bank To recompose my composure, finding myself with a capo on fret 4 I decided on the spur of the moment to sing “Sitting on the Bank” which is a simple song I wrote when I was about 15 or 16 and thinking about leaving home soon. While uploading I noticed that the melody is developing slightly even now, I’m not sure it’s correct to call it a revival though, as it’s never really been out of the repertoire.
The Mighty Quinn After the break and with the list of floor singers completed there was a little time left and Pep kindly asked me to do another, so after 3 pints I decided to do a singalong that everybody knows though it turned out not everybody at Havering Folk Club knows that the Mighty Quinn was a Bob Dylan song. The Manfred Mann cover version was better known in the UK in 1960s and afterwards.

Podcast Prototype No 1
http://andyroberts.me/andy-roberts/podcast-prototype-no-1
Podcast I had an idea about turning the Weekly Ustream.tv show into a podcast and started putting it into practice. So last Tuesday instead of just recording some of the individual songs during the webcast for uploading to youTube, I recorded the whole half an hour or so of the show, songs and talking, and saved it using the ustream record system. I was fairly happy with the way that went from a performance point of view, it worked better for me than premeditated songs and faffing about with song tit;es description and tags in the middle of a broadcast. The experiment was to see what I could do with the resulting file. I downloaded it to my Mac – ustream provides a file in .flv format (Flash) and when I clicked on the downloaded file it opened an application I’d never seen before! Mpeg-streamclip was able to export in various formats including quicktime, Mpeg4, and audio only. So far so good. The quicktime version allowed me to quickly edit out the five songs from within the video and save them individually as .mov , all ready for uploading to youtube. So this meant that with a small amount of effort I can use ustream for the live streaming show, record it all in one go, and still have the songs available in youtube for embedding elsewhere and so on. But what about the podcast? Ah, well I went away for a few days, so now I’m getting around to it. The audio podcast is here: http://andyroberts.me/wp-content/podcast/Podcast-prototype-1.mp3 and the video podcast is is still hosted on ustream at
http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/7526414 also embedded below
But this still doesn’t count as a podcast yet until I have it set up as a series you can subscribe to in iTunes or the audio player of your choice. Fortunately I still the rest of the month of June to get that boxed off, since this is still the prototyping period, and I’ve set the goal of getting started for real in July.

This is the last in my series of five image editing tutorials using Seashore for Mac. Previous video tutorials have covered:
Layers The Clone Tool Colour Select How to Photograph a Ghost
The topic for this latest video (5) is “tinting”, a technique for adding or changing colour tones for discrete areas within an image. The screencast video itself was a little too long to upload to youTube in one piece, so I’ve spit it into two parts, part 1 and part 2. How to Photograph a Ghost
http://distributedresearch.net/blog/2009/10/31/how-to-photograph-a-ghost
How to Photograph a Ghost using free image editing software As it’s halloween night tonight, and I have been requested to publish more image editing video tutorials using the Seashore free image editor for Mac, here’s the latest lesson in the series, which should be a lot of fun. It’s called “How to Photograph a Ghost” and will enable you to produce a well executed picture of a ghostly transparent human body against a real background without any noticable edges and even with the perfect shadow effects. As this is tutorial number 4 in a series, following on from :-
Image Editing – Layers Image Editing – the clone tool Image Editing – Colour Select
… we do use some slightly more advanced techniques then in the first three image editing with Seashore for Mac videos, but nothing that the beginner cannot master with just a short amount of practice. You can’t use an existing photograph, you’ll either have to go out and take a picture specially in one place, twice, or else you can download and use the two creative commons licensed photographs used as an example in the video. Image Editing Video Tutorial – Seashore for Mac 4 So first watch the video all the way through, then decide on your subject matter:
After watching the video once, you can wind back to the beginning and try copying the same technique yourself using the seashore software. The best thing would be to go out and shoot a similar pair of your own photographs, being careful to hold the same camera position for both. If you do decide to use the example pictures to practice on, you can download them by cmd+clicking the following two thumbnail pictures then selecting “save target as” or else clicking through to the larger pictures then dragging them off to your desktop. Background Picture Man against Background Image editing Photo Credits You are welcome to these or any of my photographs for online publication provided you abide by the create commons license which require you to attribute the photographer as “Andy Roberts” and link back to this blog. If you found this free video tutorial useful, it would be nice if you would please rate and favourite the image editing tutorial 4 on youtube and blog, retweet stumble etc this post, http://distributedresearch.net/blog/2009/10/31/how-to-photograph-a-ghost cheers. Andy Roberts Webcasts
http://andyroberts.me/andy-roberts/andy-roberts-webcasts
Andy Roberts Tuesday Webcasts Andy Roberts does a weekly music webcast on a Tuesday Evening at 7.00pm UK time, every week. The idea behind this is to build up a regular discipline of performance, with a sense of audience including online interactions, to have fun, to rehearse songs which may be performed at Havering Folk Club on a Wednesday or elsewhere, and to document examples from the repertoire for the Andy Roberts Music youTube channel. OK, so if you want to listen in and maybe join the live real time conversation on a Tuesday evening then all you have to do is get yourself over to ustream.tv and the Andy Roberts Music channel You don’t have to log in just to listen, but if you do then you can join in the banter, be seen, and even make requests which stand a good chance of being granted.
Tuesday 29th September Andy Roberts Show There should be a written report appearing here on the AndyRoberts.ME blog within a few days of each show, which might include embedded video from either the YouTube Channle or the Ustream saved videos, whichever is most appropriate at the time. So for example, on Tuesday 29th September we had a fun time with a session that lasted overall for nearly an hour including two new songs for the webcast, one of which was only recenty written by Andy Roberts, and the premier also of a new instrument the Saz. Here are some of the highlights from the Andy Roberts webcast show earlier this evening then: Home – Andy Roberts plays Roy Harper There’s usually a Roy Harper song each week and this week it was “Home”, which is perhapas not one of Roy’s best ever compositions but it’s kind of funky to rock to sometimes. This take didn’t make it to youTube.
Motel Blues – Andy Roberts plays Loudon Wainwright Motel Blues was one of Loudon Wainwright’s most popular songs at the time of Album 2 and it was one of the first performed live by Andy Roberts outside of the New Folk Cottage in Truro. It hasn’t seen the light of day at Havering Folk Club yet for some reason, but has featured in the Tuesday webcast before now.Deep River Blues Another first, in which Andy Roberts has a go at playing the delta blues classic “Deep River Blues” learned by ear from having heard Wizz Jones sing it somewhere. Check out some of teh other versions of this song on YouTube, especially Leo Kotke and Doc Watson.
Andy Roberts Plays The SAZ At last, after months of messing about Andy finally gets his Turkish SAZ back in tune and plays some of the improvised tunes developed for the instrument. The Saz has seven strings arranged into three groups.
New Andy Roberts Song : The Rowan Tree Here it is, the new song by Andy Roberts which is called “The Rowan Tree” and tells the tale of four witches.

Live Broadcasts Every Tuesday Night 7.00pm
http://andyrobertsmusic.blogspot.com/2009/08/live-broadcasts-every-tuesday-night.html
Andy Roberts Live BroadcastsI don't seem to have mentioned this here before but I've started doing live broadcasts every Tuesday evening at 7.00pm UK time. That's GMT + 1 at the moment, because of British Summer time, daylight saving. The broadcasts usually last about half an hour or less but could be longer if I'm in the mood. That's about 5 songs. I've written more about it on my other blog here:ustream.tv tuesday nights andy roberts music 7-00pmand the actual link to watch the broadcasts and take part is here:http://www.ustream.tv/channel/andy-roberts-musicSo it's been three weeks now and I'm enjoying it already. I've let a few friends know about it and put out a little bit of publicity, but I'm really expecting the audience to grow very slowly week by week, and that's why I've set the time and day to be as regular as clockwork - every week on Tuesday at 7.00pm. Starting from nothing we've had a maximum number of live viewers at five, eight, and now twelve last night so it's a very small elite group attending this nascent online folk club. One even logged in and joined the chat last night which is a first apart from Linda who does her best to keep anybody company who might wander in. It's nice when somebody logs in and has a name and leaves comments instead of just being a number of invisible 'Guests'.The nice thing about ustream as well, is that apart from the live viewers, you can also make recordings which are then kept on the site for posterity and can also be uploaded to youTube. So I'm building up a collection of very rough and ready videos with no editing, so sound production just raw footage from the webcam shows. What this lacks in quality is made up for by building a comprehensive collection of my repertoire, if I keep it up adding up to five new videos every week. Some will be duplicates of the same song of course, and I'll have to decide what to do about that.I think I should probably simply list the songs played here each week, and link to the YouTube or Ustream video, and if I want to embed one or two because I have something to say about them, then I'll do that in a separate post named after the particular song.So this week, last night August 18th, I played:San Francisco - Maxime le ForestierThe Wreckers Prayer - Andy RobertsMazet - Andy RobertsDon't You Grieve - Roy HarperCaptain Coulston - Traditional, Steeleye Span The week before, August 11th it wasMotel Blues - Loudon WainwrightNarrowboats - Andy RobertsBlue - Andy RobertsHighway Blues - Roy Harper ( Havering Folk Club version )Winter in Andalucia - Andy RobertsAnd the first week August 4th I sangThe Wreckers' Prayer - Andy RobertsHold On Below - Andy Roberts Angi Variation - Bert JanschGrow Fins - Captain Beefheart
